How Do You Become a Real Estate Broker?
Becoming a real estate broker requires first becoming a licensed real estate agent. In most states, including Kentucky, this requires that you:
- Are at least 18 years old
- Have a GED or high school diploma
- Complete an FBI criminal background check
- Complete real estate pre-licensure courses
- Take the license exam
- Apply for the real estate license
From there, in Kentucky, after two years of experience as a real estate agent working at least 20 hours per week, you can take courses to become a real estate broker. This can look like:
- 21 credit hours from an accredited college, with 12 in real estate and 3 hours in brokerage management
- 336 real estate classroom hours from an approved proprietary school with 48 hours in brokerage management (this includes the 96 hours you previously took to become an agent)
You must also complete an additional FBI background check and pass the license exam with state and national portions.

How Much Do Real Estate Brokers Make?
As a real estate broker, if you own your own brokerage, you'll earn more money than as a real estate agent because you keep the entire commission instead of splitting it with the company. Additionally, you can manage other real estate agents and earn a commission from their sales.
However, real estate brokers' salaries depend on where they work and how much the houses sell for. As of May 2023, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that real estate brokers made a median annual salary of $86,130. In Kentucky, the median annual salary was $76,740.
