What do you need to be a Realtor?
To become a realtor, you must first become a real estate agent. This involves taking a real estate agent course. At HomeServices Real Estate Academy, we offer real estate agent and broker courses that meet Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio requirements. You can select from in-person or online classes to meet your needs.
Step 1: Complete a Pre-Licensed Real Estate Agent Course
To become a Realtor®, you must first become a real estate agent. Our real estate agent courses break the topics up per your state's requirements. The course prepares you to pass your state's real estate agent licensing exam. The 90-120-hour course covers topics like:
- Real estate principles
- Real estate law
- Real estate finance
- Property management
- Real estate appraisal
- Home inspection
- Land planning and zoning
- Urban planning
- Commercial real estate
Step 2: Become a Licensed Real Estate Agent
Some requirements to become a real estate agent are similar in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. You must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have earned a high school diploma or your GED.
- Pass a federal criminal background check.
- Complete a pre-license program (120 hours in Ohio, 96 hours in Kentucky, 90 hours in Indiana).
- Pass your state's real estate exam.
In Ohio, an Ohio broker must sponsor you.
Step 3: Become a Real Estate
You can also become a Realtor® as a real estate broker. Like Realtors®, brokers must first become licensed agents. In addition to everything an agent does, a broker can employ real estate agents. Brokers receive commissions for their sales and the agents working under them.
At HomeServices Real Estate Academy, we offer a 48-hour Broker Law and Management course to prepare you to take the real estate broker exam and become a licensed broker.
Step 4: Join Your Local, State, and National Association of Realtors® (NAR)
Once you have your real estate license, you can begin working in the real estate industry. From there, you can join your local NAR association. This involves paying membership dues. It also means you maintain a higher ethical standard than other real estate agents, brokers, appraisers, and property managers. These standards include a record free from real estate misconduct and bankruptcy.
